I never would have imagined that when I selected the period drama couple photo for 2019 (Victoria and Albert), that was how 2019 would turn out for me. So I'm choosing a happier image for 2020 (Emma and Mr Knightley have too much tension). Period Dramas 2020 (42,925 views)

#tbt to my last fashion show of 2020 in March! Fun #tbt to my last fashion show of 2020 in March!
Funny how the three outfits from #IvanSayersCollection seem to represent the rest of my year:
1. 1910 Bicycle Suit - Cover up and stay away from me.
2. 1930s Pro-Rec uniform - Lazy me finally started working out since the end of March.
3. Late 1950s Cheerleader uniform - It’s my turn to try to encourage and comfort you!
The Great Fire of London was finally extinguished The Great Fire of London was finally extinguished by dawn on Thursday, 6 September 1666. Roughly 13,200 houses & 87-89 out of 109 City churches over 436 acres of land (373 within the city walls & 63 without) had been destroyed. Although there were only 6 recorded deaths, the figure is likely in the thousands as the poorer residents were unlikely to have been accounted for and many were cremated by the fire, leaving very little trace. 80-90% of Londoners (80-100k) were rendered homeless, some of whom subsequently died from starvation or hypothermia.

The Duke of York returned to Whitehall at 1am, having worked tirelessly since 6am on the 5th & from 5am-11pm/12am on the 4th. Both he & King Charles II had helped with passing pails of water, demolitions, and protecting foreigners from angry mobs. Charles financially rewarded the volunteer firefighters.

Unfortunately, the gunpowder explosions had confused some paranoid people into believing they were being attacked by the Dutch (England was in the middle of the 2nd Anglo-Dutch War) or Catholics. On Thursday morning, Charles addressed the newly homeless Londoners that the fire had not been started by foreigners but was an act of God. Unsatisfied with the statement, the people - incl. the Farriner family - found and hanged French watchmaker Robert Hubert even though he was not in London during the fire and was mentally ill.

It finally rained on the 9th but it was not enough to quench the small fires that remained or reignited for half a year. 10 October was declared a ‘day of fasting and humiliation’ and that very day, it rained for 10 days, ending the long drought.

London would rise from the ashes. The city would be rebuilt over the next 50 years with more brick or stone buildings and wider streets. London eventually became ‘not only the finest…but the most healthy city in the world', according to one contemporary Londoner, Dr. John Woodward.

354 years later, we must remember that rebirth always follows calamity. What is our attitude like and what will we choose to do during times of adversity?

It’s the Last Night of the Proms! 🎶 This yea It’s the Last Night of the Proms! 🎶

This year marks the 125th anniversary of the Proms and will be the first without the usual flag-waving audience at the Royal Albert Hall (they’ll be watching from home). Enjoy! 🥂

Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles at the Musée d’Or Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris is the third and smaller version that was painted for his mother and sister in the Netherlands at the end of September 1889. (Van Gogh mentioned this in a letter to his brother Theo on 28 September 1889.) The other two versions can be found at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Art Institute of Chicago. Each of these paintings vary in colour and details but the one in Paris is my favourite. 🪑🛏🖼🚪

Happy October and Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!🏮 Happy October and Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!🏮

This year, Mid-Autumn Festival falls on 1 October (15th day of 8th lunar month), which coincides with the Harvest Full Moon so don’t forget to look up tonight! 🌕

Depending on one’s cultural background, this ancient holiday is celebrated in different ways. My childhood memories of this fest are decorating or seeing colourful lanterns and eating pastries called mooncakes (I prefer the lotus cakes but keep those cooked egg-yolk ones away from me). 🥮
Nowadays, holidays of any kind aren’t really celebrated in my home unless there are relatives or friends involved. 😕
On another note: there are 3 months left until the end of 2020!

Today would have been the Lord Mayor’s Show, an Today would have been the Lord Mayor’s Show, an annual event in London that dates back to 1215! The last time the LMS was cancelled was in 1852 for the Duke of Wellington’s funeral. Whilst we wait another year, here are some photos of the Lord Mayor’s State Coach at the Museum of London from 2016. The coach has been in use since November 1757 and was recently restored in 2018.
